Getting Rehired by Your Former Employer – Just How Difficult is it?
September 3, 2008
I was recently interviewed by a writer for an article titled, “How to Get Rehired by a Former Employer.” I thought the article Laurie Norman was writing was very timely with the economic difficulties right now because many people who have lost their jobs due to corporate downsizing are turning to former employers for employment opportunities. In her article, Laure provides some great advice and as she states, “Getting rehired by a former employer has more to do with your relations(s) with the old firm than it does your skills.” I highly recommend you read Laurie’s article – just click here.
Here are my own recommendations if you’re looking to get rehired by a former employer:
- First, make sure you left the company on a positive note.
- Next, make sure your resume is updated and positively represents your skills, experience and education. Your resume is, in essence, your personal advertisement so make sure it’s the best it can be.
- Make a list of everyone with whom you worked or knew at your previous company so you see your company network laid out on paper.
- Make contact with all the people from your company network and find out what’s happened or changed since you left.
- Put the word out to your network and let people know you’re interested in working there again. Be sure to email them your resume.
- Did you work with or know anyone in the HR department, specifically in the area of recruiting? Be sure to also contact them and let them know you’re interested in open positions.
- Regularly review the company’s website for their current job postings and immediately contact the hiring manager for those positions your interested in/qualified for.
- Be sure you have an answer for why you left in the first place and why you want to come back.
- Be ready and able to answer these questions: Where did you go work after you left the company? What did you learn in that position(s)? How have you improved your knowledge, skills and abilities since you left the company? What additional value will you bring to the company if you’re re-hired?
- Remain positive – it can take time to rebuild your network at your previous company. You might need to have a few lunches with people, coffee chats, etc. to re-establish yourself with your previous network.
